How To Make - Photo Accordion
How To Make - Photo Accordion
Friday, July 17, 2009
Here is the tutorial on how to make a Photo Accordion. My example has been made with bookcloth but it will look just as good if you use fabric. This version will hold up to 14 photographs (double-sided) or 8 photographs if you only fill one side. Look here to get an idea of how the accordion looks once the photographs have been placed in it.
Materials Needed:
Small piece of bookcloth or fabric
2 pieces of book board cut 5½˝ x 7½˝
I large decorative button
80cm hat elastic
Perle cotton
A1 piece black card (acid free)
Double-sided tape ¼˝ width
Photo corners to attach photographs
Tools Needed:
PVA glue and brush
Pencil and ruler
Scissors and an awl
Large needle
Bone folder
Wax paper
Stanley Knife
If you have any queries about materials, leave a comment or email me.
Congratulations
Your finished accordion is now ready for those photographs
1. Make the photo insert. Using Stanley knife cut two pieces of black card 7¼″ wide across the A1 piece of card. Use the bone folder to score the card at 5¼˝ intervals. Three folds on each piece.
2. Both pieces of card will have excess. Trim one piece on the fold. Trim the other piece ¼˝ beyond the fold. Place the tape on the inside of the small fold then insert the other card underneath. Press firmly. This completes the insert.
3. Cut 2 pieces of bookcloth ½˝ larger than your book board on each edge.
4. Place the cloth wrong side up under the board and mark each corner with a faint pencil mark. Then glue the board and place it on the cloth. Press firmly. Use bone folder to smooth out any lumps.
5. Cut each corner as shown above.
6. Then glue and fold over each of the long sides.
7. Cut each corner as shown above.
8. Fold and glue each corner as shown above. Then glue and fold over the short sides.
9. Your covered boards should now look like this.
10. Place the button in the centre of one of the covered boards. Use a pencil to mark the centre point.
11. Use the awl to make two holes in the cover where you made the pencil marks
12. Sew the button to the front cover and knot to secure. Note the button will not sit completely flat.
13. Place glue on one end of the photo insert.
14. Centre the glued end of the insert over the wrong side of one of the covers. Press firmly. Once you are sure that it secure. Place a piece of wax paper between the card. Repeat this process with the other cover.
15. Take the hat elastic and pass it through your stitching underneath the button (this may be easier to do while you are sewing the button on). Tie a secure knot with in the elastic. Trim the ends and pull the knot until it sits under the button.
16. Finally loop the elastic over the button. Weight your finished accordion under some heavy books for a few hours while it dries.
